Bollards

Frequently Asked Questions

A bollard is a short vertical post. Originating from nautical operations, it meant a post used on a ship or a quay, principally for mooring. The word 'bollard' now also describes a variety of items that control or direct road traffic, such as posts arranged in a line to obstruct the passage of motor vehicles whilst allowing pedestrian or bicycle access. Bollards are principally used to separate vehicles from pedestrians and protect high-cost structures or objects from damage by moving vehicles in Sydney, Melbourne, & Brisbane. Bollards vary in height and diameter depending on the degree of security required. They are a specialty product that targets a specific task or threat.
A bollard is used is to physically block vehicle invasion and to protect pedestrians and high-cost property from damage caused by moving vehicles. Bollards are available in a range of sizes, styles and finishes to accentuate or aesthetically stand out in their landscape but with their primary consideration is to be resilient to high force impact.

The basic and most common form of bollards are Parking Bollards, these which are used to distinguish disabled shared zones, serve as protection between pedestrians and vehicle driveways, loading docks, stairs or ramps, keep emergency doorways, fire hydrants, trolley bays etc clear from obstruction externally, and more!

Steel bollards are typically used in warehouses and factories providing the ultimate protection through the adequate wall thickness of the bollards.

Removable bollards are used when wanting to secure and protect driveways, footpaths, garage, and factory doors from vehicle access at selected times. This is achieved through their easy removal using a key or padlock mechanism, with storage sleeves available for secure storage.

The application of impact recovery bollards is used when there is the possibility that vehicles may drive over or may occur slight impact in traffic or construction areas.

Although stainless steel bollards are used as a protection of assets, they are primarily chosen for their pleasant aesthetic appeal at the entrance of train stations, airports, shopping centres, hotels, schools, universities, stadiums, and any other public facilities.

Concrete bollards are large concrete objects that are commonly used as anti-terror or anti-ram-raid property protection. In shapes consisting of cubes, spheres logs and more they can be placed around the entrance of councils, public parks, shared eating areas or even recreational spaces.

Area Safe’s range of parking bollards are effective in low speed environments such as carparks or factories. They are effective in keeping pedestrians separated from vehicles and protecting high-cost structures and buildings from damage caused by moving vehicles and machinery. Removable bollards are effective for the purpose of being removed to open a driveway, footpath, garage or factory door to vehicle traffic. As an alternative, for use as an anti-terror or anti-ram-raid bollard, our range of concrete bollards are also effective. It must be noted that in high speed and extreme traffic environments such as public roads, a heavier or crash rated bollard or barrier must be considered.
There are multiple ways in which bollards can be installed using surface mounted and in-ground options. Surface mounted bollards can be installed into both bitumen and concrete. When installing into bitumen, the surface needs to be cut and you will need to excavate for a footing of 400x400x400mm. The concrete then needs to be poured and you need to fully cure and clean prior to application. Once this has been done, or existing concrete is in place, 4 holes will need to be drilled as per the base plate and simply using a dyna bold or screw bold for anchoring down.

For a stronger application, an in-ground bollard can be used you will need to core drill a hole into the concrete. If it is into bitumen the bitumen layer will need to be removed using a road saw or masonry grinding disk and a hole of 400x400x400mm will need to be dug or as per specifications. The hole needs to be slightly larger, approximately 10mm larger than the diameter of the bollard. Fill the hole half-way before placing your bollard in with great support when pushing the bollard and remaining concrete till it is flush with the surface of bitumen or concrete.

In addition to concrete and bitumen application, it is also possible to install bollards into soft ground such as dirt. You are required to dig a hole approximately 400x400x400mm or 400mm round. Place the bollard in the hole and fill with concrete until it is flush with the surface. It is important that the bollard is kept a little above the ground in the hole to ensure that concrete can go under and fill up the inside of the bollard underneath for extra stability and support. It is crucial that a level is always used with this application to ensure your bollard is straight and upright once the concrete has dried. We recommend at least 300mm of the bollard should be below the ground level but for larger diameter bollards i.e. 140mm plus, it should be 400mm or more.

Grouting under the base on the lower side to provide a level base is the ideal way to install a base plate bollard on a sloping ground. It is important that bollards are installed upright to ensure their appropriate use.
There are two ways in which a bollard can be attached to existing concrete, either using a surface mounted bollard or in-ground bollard that will need to be core-drilled.

Surface Mounted Bollard

  1. Clean the area where the bollard is going to be installed
  2. Mark out the bollards positioning according to site requirements, consultants’ specifications, or at the discretion of the customers own risk analysis
  3. Move the bollard and drill the holes marked from the base plate Ø12m
  4. Extract dust from holes and clean area
  5. Position the base plate bollards accurately and fasten with washers and appropriate dyna bolts

In-Ground Bollard

  1. Clean the area where the bollard is going to be installed
  2. Mark out the bollards positioning according to site requirements, consultants’ specifications, or at the discretion of the customers own risk analysis
  3. Core drill a hole in the concrete, approximately 10mm larger than the diameter of the bollard being installed
  4. Fill the hole half-way with grout and push the bollard in, finishing with more grout until flush with the concrete slab
  5. Clean area and ensuring there are no concrete splatter or grout on the bollard

Depending on the location and type of bollard used, it is not always necessary for bollards to be filled with concrete. In high risk areas such as shop fronts or drop off areas, filling a bollard with concrete is recommended. When deciding to fill a bollard with concrete, in-ground bollards are ideal as they become very strong and a great barrier for stopping vehicles. This is because the strength of the concrete filled bollard is not restricted to ground level strength but follows through underground to the bottom of the bollard placement. Filling a base plate bollard with concrete is not necessary and will not add any additional strength as it is still only as strong as its bolts.

It should also be noted that when filling a bollard from the top with the cap removed, the diameter of the bollard may expand, and you will be unable to re-place the cap on-top of the bollard. To ensure this isn’t an issue, it is recommended that with in-ground bollards, they are concrete filled upside down, left to dry, then installed.

The cost of installation of bollards vary depending on the type of bollard being used (i.e. base plate or in-ground styles), the surface they are being installed onto and the quantity being installed. Installation of core drilling and concreting of in-ground bollards is the most expensive but also the strongest. Area Safe can install bollards in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne – simply speak to one of our sales consultants to discuss your project requirements and finalise an installation proposal.
Area Safe’s bollards do not have a crash rating. Alternatively, an engineer could provide a rating based on vehicle weight & speed and the bollards installation specifications.
Concrete bollards are the strongest type of bollard when installed correctly. When it comes to steel bollards the wider the diameter and the thicker the wall, the stronger the bollard will be. Area Safe’s range of bollards come with a 5mm wall thickness where alternate brands offer their bollards with 3mm wall thickness.
The only Australian Standard regarding the height of a bollard is in disabled shared zones. The bollard that must be used in a share zone set out by the Australian Standards must be 1300mm high above the ground. In all other situations, there is no current Australian Standard restrictions on the type and height of bollards that can be used. It should be taken into consideration the type of vehicle the bollard will be alerting i.e. trucks need bollards they can visually see, so a higher coloured bollard may be the best fit.
A disabled shared zone bollard must be 1300mm high to comply with DDA standards. The DDA & Australian Standards do not stipulate a colour requirement for shared zone bollards. Area Safe’s shared zone bollard is safety yellow.
