In October 2017 at the launch of National Safe Work Month, Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash, Minister for Employment said: “the number of Australians killed at work each year has been steadily declining for a decade, but we cannot afford to be complacent. In fact, safety is an integral part of doing business…safety should be an everyday conversation in your workplace”.

Did you know that according to Safe Work Australia, 3414 workers have lost their lives in work-related incidents from 2003 to 2016? That is an average of 20 workers dying at work per month! Just in 2016 alone, 182 workers were fatally injured at work – still an average of 15 workers per month.

Between 2003 and 2016 -

• 67% of fatalities involved vehicles
• 59% were vehicle/pedestrian collision

In 2016 alone –

• 42% from vehicle collision
• 54% involved a vehicle
• 14% from falling from heights
• 9% hit by moving objects
• 50% were in just two industries – ‘transport, postal & warehousing’ and ‘agriculture, forestry & fishing’
