Blacktown International Sports Park, located in Rooty Hill, New South Wales, Australia, is a premier multi-sport complex that caters to a variety of athletic disciplines. Originally developed for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, the facility has grown into a significant sports destination, hosting athletics, baseball, softball, and more. It serves both community and elite sports levels, hosting numerous national and international events, which makes it a vital component of the Australian sports landscape.

The Requirement

To enhance cleanliness, promote eco-friendly transportation, ensure accessibility, and improve pedestrian safety at the facility.

The Challenges

• Durability and Weather Resistance: The selected products must withstand various weather conditions, including rain, heat, and potential damage from UV rays. Selecting materials that are durable and weather-resistant ensures longevity and reduces maintenance costs.
• Vandalism Resistance: Public spaces are susceptible to vandalism. Choosing robust materials and secure installation methods can help mitigate these risks.
• Accessibility Compliance: Ensuring that the products meet accessibility standards, such as those specified by the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), is crucial. This involves selecting designs that accommodate all users, including those with disabilities.
• Aesthetic Integration: The products should complement the existing aesthetics of the sports park and enhance the overall visual appeal of the environment, aligning with the park's design and landscape.

The Solution

After evaluating the challenges and requirements, The Blacktown International Sport Park selected a few key products, including the DDA shared zone bollards, Surex Modular pedestrian safety rail. 

The DDA shared zone bollards offers the following features:

• Enhanced Visibility and Safety: Premium bollards are equipped with a red reflective band that uses Class 1 reflective material. Along with the UV resistant Safety Yellow powder coat, this feature significantly enhances visibility in low-light conditions, improving safety by making the bollards more noticeable to drivers and pedestrians.
• Australian Standard compliant: The critical dimension of DDA bollards is the height, which must be no less than 1300mm. This means that drivers can see the bollard more easily over the bonnet and in rear vision mirrors. Shared zone DDA bollards must be provided at the correct height for accessible parking according to AS2890.1:2004. (More recently, AS2890.6:2022 has been updated to include a 300mm high red reflective band starting at 900mm off the ground).
• Superior Corrosion Resistance: The bollards are hot-dip galvanised and finished in Safety Yellow gloss powder coat. This dual protection ensures superior corrosion resistance, maintaining both the function and appearance of the bollards over time.
• Robust Construction: These bollards boast a heavy 5mm wall, providing a robust structure that is capable of withstanding significant impact and environmental stresses. This makes them especially suitable for high-traffic areas where potential impacts from vehicles are a concern.
• Precision and Quality in Manufacturing: The base plates of these bollards are laser-cut, ensuring precise hole sizes and positions for installation. This level of precision supports easier and more secure installations, reducing the risk of errors and enhancing overall stability.

The  Surex Modular pedestrian safety rail offers the following features:

• Adaptable Design: The system's modular, no-weld construction allows easy customization to fit any layout, ideal for creating specific walkways and safety zones.
• Safety Enhancement: These rails prevent access to dangerous traffic areas and fall points, acting as both a physical and visual deterrent to enhance overall safety.
• Durability and Weather Resistance: Supplied in powder-coated safety yellow, black, or natural galvanised finishes with all fittings hot-dipped, the system withstands all weather conditions.
• Easy Installation: Provided in kit form with a simple assembly process, the system requires minimal maintenance and is easy to set up.
• Customisable Options: A broad selection of fittings and accessories, including different intersections and pedestrian gates, allows the system to meet diverse site requirements efficiently.
