What do I need to do? - Dangerous Goods Storage

Are you aware of the basics for flammable dangerous goods storage? Some basic rules are as below.

Dangerous goods of different classes cannot be stored together.

Gas Bottle Cages

  1. Avoid indoor storage of gas cylinders wherever possible.
  2. Gas bottle storage cages must be kept a minimum distance of 3m from other dangerous goods stores, combustible matter, or ignition/heat source (e.g. steam pipes, boilers, electricity outlets & switches, smoking area).
  3. Gas bottle storage cages must be positioned at least 1m away from any door, window, vent or duct.

Flammable Liquid Cabinets

  1. Aggregate storage should not exceed 850L (e.g. 2x 250L & 1x 350L cabinets together).
  2. Aggregate quantities must be separated by at least 10m.
  3. Position at least 3m from other dangerous goods, combustible matter, or ignition/heat source (e.g. steam pipes, boilers, electricity outlets & switches, smoking area).
  4. This 3m rule does not apply if less than 100L is being stored in closed containers within an Australian Standard compliant DG cabinet.

Storage of flammable and combustible goods within a standards compliant cabinet is mandatory according to AS1940-2004, Minor Storage Table 2.1. Each relevant Australian Standard includes a section titled ‘Section 2, Minor Storage,’ which determines the volume of chemicals allowable before it becomes mandatory for storage to be within a standards compliant store (e.g. cabinet).

Popular standards that can be referenced include:

  • AS1940 The storage and handling of flammable and combustible liquids
  • AS3780 The storage and handling of corrosive substances
  • AS3833 The storage and handling of mixed classes of dangerous goods, in packages and intermediate bulk containers
  • AS4326 The storage and handling of oxidising agents
